Sir Anthony Hopkins Reflects on Nearly 5 Decades of Sobriety

Sir Anthony Hopkins marked an extraordinary 49 years of sobriety on Sunday, 29 December, just two days before his 87th birthday.

Sharing his journey in a heartfelt Instagram video, the Welsh actor reflected on the pivotal moment in 1975 that led him to seek help for his alcohol addiction.

“I was having such fun,” he admitted, recalling how his drinking spiraled into dangerous territory, including memory gaps and driving while intoxicated. Realizing he was “in big, big trouble,” Hopkins reached out to a support group and began his long trek to sobriety.

The two-time Oscar-winning actor – known for roles in “The Silence of the Lambs” and “The Father” – emphasized the joys of an alcohol-free life: “These 49 years have been more fun than ever,” he shared, urging those struggling with addiction to seek help, reminding them they are not alone.

As Hopkins prepares to celebrate his 87th birthday on New Year’s Eve, his message resonates deeply, especially during a holiday season often associated with excessive drinking.

“If you have a problem, there is help. It’s a condition, not a moral failing,” he encouraged. He concluded with optimism: “Happy New Year – and one day at a time.”
